Proof: North
Poimena Gallery 5 - 27 June
Proof: North brought together many of the nowhereprint collective and friends, with an emphasis on the many varied printmaking techniques we use to make our work. Held at Poimena Gallery in Launceston, it was organised by Olivia Moroney, Tasmanian artist represented by Handmark Gallery and member of nowhereprint collective. Images thanks to Poimena Gallery and Louise Middleton.
Each artist was asked to write about the processes they use in their practice. Mine was the following -
“I explore the alpine landscapes of Tasmania through the medium of hand painted linocut. I took up printmaking because it is a many-staged medium which allowed me to break up the creative process and fit it into time around my responsibilities as a carer for a family member.
I love the carving part of the process - repetitive and calming.
I love the way the oil-based ink and the watercolour repel each other and yet work together to create the image. The certainty of the linocut image and the subtlety of the watercolour is a combination that speaks of the landscape itself - so solid and yet so fragile.
I have recently begun tearing and cutting up my linocuts and refitting them, following lines found within the pieces and finding points of connection. It feels like drawing. I love that this tearing and refitting allows me to explore ways I connect with the landscape rather than just depicting it. The collages have evolved into maps of walks and journeys, maps of connections and interior landscapes. “
