‘Proof: South’
Rosny Schoolhouse Gallery 1-22 June 2025
As Printmakers the proof is the image we make prior to editioning a series of prints taken from a matrix of wood, lino, metal or mesh. It’s the image which best represents the final concept of what we need to communicate visually to the viewer. Proof is also the evidence presented that convinces the mind that something is true. Sometimes we will only need one proof to deliver our vision, sometimes need many variations of proofs to get us to that point.
This show demonstrates the many varied techniques and processes that the ‘nowhereprint’ collective and friends utilise to present their views and the worlds they exist in.
Each artist was asked to write a statement about the printmaking processes they use in their practice.
My artists statement for the Proof: South show is as follows
I explore the alpine landscapes of Tasmania through the medium of hand painted linocut. I took up printmaking because it is a many-staged medium which allowed me to break up the creative process and fit it into time around my responsibilities as a carer for a family member.
I love the carving part of the process - repetitive and calming.
I love the way the oil-based ink and the watercolour repel each other and yet work together to create the work. The certainty of the linocut image and the subtlety of the watercolour is a combination that speaks to the landscape itself - so solid and yet so fragile.
I also love to explore and exploit the repetitive nature of printmaking. Repetition and pattern is something that speaks of the cycle of life and these are ideas I am exploring in ‘Over and Over’ and ‘Helix’, repeating lino blocks of an alpine landscape inspired by Mt Field National Park.
