Lost World Series 2026

This series is inspired by my experiences of the Lost World track at the north-eastern side of Kunanyi. I began this series in response a brief written by Emma Magnusson-Reid for a nowhereprint group show, ‘Surfacing’, at Devonport Regional Gallery. I wanted to focus on the verticality of the landscape, and chose long narrow paper to work on. Below is the statement I wrote for the work which was included in the exhibition -

Lost World:  A trail on the north-eastern flank of Kunanyi where a dramatic field of giant dolerite boulders and crumbling columns is accessible via a challenging scramble over monoliths latticed with crevice-dwelling plants. Occasional highly polished branches, made smooth by past hikers’ hands, are clues that you’re going the right way.  

Lost World:  A subgenre of fantasy/science fiction born of late Victorian adventure novels where “unknown” civilisations are “discovered” by western archaeologists and adventurers.  The idea has fallen into disuse by virtue of increasing geographical knowledge, and a crumbling of colonial ideologies.  

Experiencing a new landscape can seem like discovering a lost world. Tasmania frequently provides this experience. Exploring unmapped and uncharted territory provides a metaphor for human existence. We are all, quite literally, exploring new worlds - each living a life that has never been lived before. Sometimes we stick to the main thoroughfares. Sometimes we end up scrambling over rocks, trying to hang on, either in search of adventure or in a effort to survive.
